Biography

I am Professor of Human-Centred Technology, within the School of Design & Informatics, based in the Division of Cyber Security. Prior to joining Abertay in October 2019, I worked in industry, primarily in director roles, of research, advanced technology, user experience, and innovation, for NCR Corp. This spanned several organisations and geographies, and included building and leading global teams, developing technologies, customer consulting, advancing business strategy, project management, and negotiating partnerships.

My current research interests are broad, around applied people-centred technology research. With a background in applied psychology, human-computer interaction, ergonomics, usability, and consumer research, I enjoy working with, across, and between disciplines. I graduated from University of Central Lancashire (BA Hons Psychology) and University of Birmingham (MSc Work Design & Ergonomics). I am a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol.), Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors (MIEHF), and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS).

After Birmingham, I worked for Westland Helicopters (now Leonardo) in avionics systems on flight control design, and then worked as a research assistant at the University of Nottingham in the field of occupational ergonomics. Following this, as a research scientist for the Medical Research Council, at the University of Sheffield, I conducted research in social and applied psychology related to advanced technology. Moving to the Netherlands, I worked for Philips in Eindhoven, as part of their industrial design and human factors division, supporting the development and evaluation of everyday consumer products. I returned to the UK to join AT&T Corp, as a senior consultant, mostly working with Bell Labs in New Jersey. Then, with NCR Corp, I helped establish an award-winning innovation lab in London, after which I took on the role of Director of Advanced Technology & Research, NCR Labs, which entailed leading teams across three continents in multiple disciplines. Subsequently, I developed teams in design ethnography, the core in Singapore, and customer consulting teams, with a focus on design and user experience.

My research interests are varied although always centred on people, design and technology innovation. and I am especially keen on multi- and inter-disciplinary collaboration. If you are interested in postgraduate research in these areas, please contact me.
